As the uterus grows, the body’s center of gravity shifts, the abdominal muscles stretch, posture changes, and muscles and joints take on new mechanical demands. Pregnancy-related hormonal changes also increase ligament laxity, which can contribute to back, hip, and pelvic discomfort.

Prenatal massage gives us an opportunity to work with the musculoskeletal and nervous systems during this period of rapid change. Research on massage during pregnancy has found benefits including reductions in back and leg pain, stress, and anxiety, while some studies also report improvements in relaxation and sleep.

Massage is generally considered an incredible option during uncomplicated pregnancy when adapted for the pregnant body; positioning, pressure, and techniques should be modified as pregnancy progresses and for each client's individual circumstances.

Pregnancy doesn't simply make a body bigger—it changes how the entire body carries, balances, moves, and rests. Prenatal bodywork is designed with those changes in mind.
